Projects
Below you can see and read about some of the projects I did during my years at the Jean School. It starts with the last project and when you scroll down you will see the previous ones.
Japanese Dream In China & New York
Japan is a true ‘denim country’. Because I am a bit of a ‘dreamer’ I came up with the theme ‘Japanese Dream’ for my final exam project at the Jean School. The exposition I visited that year in The Van Gogh Museum about Van Gogh and Japan gave me a lot of inspiration. The jacket of my Japanese two-piece is inspired by the Japanese kimono. The red round details are from the Japanese flag which I also used for the accompanying flaired jeans. These garments are very easy to combine. The fabrics I picked are made of recycled cotton. Because the concept of my design is a ‘deep dream’ I wanted ‘deep indigo’. The work of the three best graduates of my year would be shown at The Kingpins Show in China and at The Denim Days in New York. I was very pleased to hear I was one of them.
Pull&Bear
In this project we had to make a spring/summer collection for Pull&Bear. After a visit to the Pull&Bear store I choose for the theme ‘Playful’. On the internet I searched for images so I could show my concept with a mood board. I also made a fabric card, haberdashery and a color chart. The colors of my color chart are also present in my mood board. I focused my collection on girls because that is what Pull&Bear does: making clothes for young adults. I got some ideas while searching for pictures on the internet. I looked at trends, combined them with my ideas and then I started to design. The denim skirt I made had different shapes with color block (dark blue) in it. This gave it a very playful effect. The denim jacket (shown here) also has this effect. Here the color block is yellow. ‘Destroy’ comes with both jacket and skirt.
Advance Denim
This project was a collaboration between Advance Denim and Jean School. The subject was ‘protection’. I choose for a jacket. On WGSN I looked for trends and then I saw inspiring clothes because of their size, colors and details. ‘Proportion as protection’. So proportion used to create a sense of protection. Hey! That’s my theme! The concept story is about a female security guard that works at fashion shows. Security guards work in buildings but also on the streets. The ‘Cool Max Denim’ I choose for the inside of the jacket (which you can not see on this picture) is a fabric that makes you warm when you’re too cold and colder when you feeling too warm. Exactly what I needed. For the outside I wanted another color than yellow which I think is very cliche when it comes to protection. Because the jacket is oversized it gives you confidence but is comfortable at the same time.
G-Star
In my first year at the Jean School I had to design a 3301 jeans for G-Star. Part of the project was that we would wash our jeans in Italy! Before I start making a concept I want to know: for who am I making this? Then I take a close look at the brand. I look for trends, take pictures of clothes in shops. After that I make some sketches to get ideas and write some text so that it’s clear what I mean. Now I sketch my final idea. My concept here is about a young woman who goes to Bali where she buys a house which she paints all white. She paints all the walls on her knees. This is why the jeans have kneepads and white paint splatters. Because of the wooden floor they are also brown tinted. The jeans are slim fit with a dirty, tough look. Because it is for a woman I made the curvy waistband a little higher and a bit smaller. Finishing touch: the promised Italian stonewash.
Tommy Hilfiger
This was the first project I did at Jean School: a shirt for Tommy Hilfiger. We were told by our teachers that the people from Tommy Hilfiger would pay special attention to the washing of the shirt. First I made a mood board with the theme Color Block. Then I made some sketches with a different way of color block. I wanted the color block not on the whole shirt but just on the sides. Before I went to work I made a style sheet. In the proces of making the shirt I changed the color block a bit (at the sleeves and the back). The bottom of the shirt I kept round because I thought that would be original and playful. I really enjoyed this project and I was looking forward to the next one.
